DIY Tips

Homeowners can get rid of the occasional mouse however of if there are several mice there may be a larger issue that could require professional help.

Here are some tips to keep rodents out of your home.

  • Try to keep the garage door closed. Mice have a keen sense of smell and stored food may encourage mice to take up residence in your garage.
  • If stored in the garage, keep pet food in airtight containers so the smell does not entice them into your garage. Bags of dog or cat food on the garage floor make for fat and happy mice. Many times, they will chew a hole in the bottom of the bag where it goes unnoticed.
  • Pet food should not be left in feeding bowls overnight or during the day. After feeding, stow away the remaining food.
  • Clean up spilled food. Keeping food only in the kitchen and dining area makes cleaning easier.

Crawl Space

Inspect the crawl space for any signs of a current rodent problem. Here are some key signs to look for.

  • Look for signs of rodent droppings.
  • Droppings could be on top of the sill plate, on or under insulation.
  • Tunnels through or behind the insulation.
  • Shredded paper, insulation, or vapor barrier.
  • Holes in stored boxes.

Attic

Rodents, especially squirrels, hoard food and can cause a severe beetle infestation inside your home.

  • Do not feed squirrels. They prefer a nest near their food source that could be your attic.
  • Cut back vegetation and shrubs against the home and tree branches several feet from your roof.
  • Ensure attic screen vents are installed and repair if damaged. These prevent squirrels from nesting in your attic insulation as well.
